In this blog I am sharing the symbolic story of the birth of Jesus and how it relates to YOU. If anything, the Biblical stories, written in symbolism and allegory, are presented to offer practical application on how to understand the possibilities and potentials inherent in life. (That does not mean that you cannot take it as a literal event, if you wish.) Yet for those who wish to understand a personal, deeper meaning of this story, I offer this symbolic interpretation. As you read this biblical description, imagine you are listening to a dream. Also, the specific names and their meanings are taken from the original Hebrew, Arabic and Greek languages. (Check this in the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary published by Unity School of Christianity)
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother, Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, an upright man unwilling to expose her to the law, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said to him: “Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as your wife. It is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this child. She is to have a son and you are to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin shall be with child and give birth to a son, and they shall call him Emmanuel,” a name which means ‘God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him and received her into his home as his wife. He had no relations with her at any time before she bore a son, whom he named Jesus. Matthew 1:18-23.
We know the story is about the birth the Christ Self as represented by Jesus. Jesus is the great teacher of LOVE. The symbolic birth indicates you are moving or being born into YOUR Higher Consciousness. Mary, the mother, represents the receptive quality of love and intuition; Joseph represents the masculine use of imagination. So, we know that it is through love, intuition, and imagination that this shift to higher awareness takes place.
Symbolically you are literally expanding into a new, higher state (version) which is represented through a baby (new way). The name Jesus means deliverance through God or Love. Hence, Jesus is the ultimate symbol of Higher Consciousness.
Inasmuch as this new way was brought forth through the Holy Spirit (God) and not in a traditional manner, there is fear and shame. (Imagine taking a step in a new direction – assuming an unknown path and feeling fear and trepidation. In this case, the new path is through a virgin birth, which simply means it has never been done before. ‘Virgin’ means NEW, never been done before.)
Thus, there is fear and doubt about venturing in this new way (birth). It is unconventional. Yet, the birth/new way instructed us that it is time to shift into a new possibility. Imagination (Joseph) is comforted by an angel (messenger of God) to release fear and doubt and accept this divine event. Hence, Jesus’ birth is acknowledged as a prophetic fulfillment and his name given to indicate salvation, release of sins (errors) and awareness that ‘God is with us.’
If we are to understand the symbolic implication of this story, let us accept that we are moving into a time of Higher understanding which indicates that we are to direct our imagination (Joseph) and intuition and love (Mary) to work in tandem to bring forth (birth) a new way/path that will expand and transform us into more loving, kinder, forgiving beings – that no longer operate from fear, doubt, and old prejudicial ways.
This a beautiful story and has wonderful meaning for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. Each person can decide how to put its meaning into use in his life. It is my thought that each day we can choose to be kind, to smile more, to live in gratitude, and tune-in as best we can to the spirit of love and forgiveness.
