Remember comedian Groucho Marx with the cigar and glasses? He still has stuff to say... Each morning when I open my eyes, I say to myself, "I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I am going to be happy in it.
Our most important possession is free will. Choice plays a major role in every part of our lives - personally, socially, in business, and spiritually. Through the faculty of choice, we set the tone for our lives. Because every event is neutral, it is our decision to establish its value thereby making it positive or negative... an opportunity or detriment.
For instance, a person whose employment is terminated can focus on the loss of a job or the opportunity to step up to his next vehicle of expression/job. A flat tire can be a deterrent or an opportunity to ask for and receive help. Illness is either debilitating or a time to regroup, refocus, and set priorities. The death of a loved one can be construed as an interminable emptiness or a chance to live fully, remembering and honoring the gifts exchanged and shared.
I doubt Abraham Lincoln rued the fact that he was raised in a log cabin with few accoutrements. Instead he self-educated and moved forward through perseverance, integrity, and hard work. Dolly Parton did the same as she used the poverty of her rural background to great success in writing hugely popular songs.
There are no accidents. The situation and people in your life represent your current learning experiences. Stay open to them, use them well, and you will transcend smallness, anger, fear and all other negative states as you transcend into lightness, joy, love, and freedom. No need to resent the cards you were deal. Use them instead to grow and to win!
